Healing Your Best Friend Cancer Success Program with Dr. Kate McDermott

Dr. Kate McDermott, an integrative veterinarian, specializes in using food as therapy. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School and has earned certifications in veterinary acupuncture and veterinary food therapy. With her array of expertise, she has the ability to combine conventional medicine with alternative medicine resulting in the best lives possible for the animals she treats.

For those who are skeptical about alternative medicine, on her informative Facebook page, she exclaimed “if you’ve ever felt the doubt or judgement or skepticism from someone who doesn’t quite understand that you want to use food, or acupuncture, or herbs, or supplements, or some other “alternative” treatment to help your dog, I want you to know you’re definitely NOT alone. And that you’re not doing something “wrong” for your dog. You’re in great company here. We are 100% on board with using modern Western medicine AND all those other amazing methods to treat your dog and help them feel their absolute best every day of their life.”

Healing Your Best Friend

Dr. McDermott has developed a program known as “Healing Your Best Friend” to work with dog owners to transform their lives with the power of whole foods. We were honored for her to appear on “A Dog’s Life” podcast to explain her dog cancer diet program and what it involves.

There is so much controversy regarding what to feed dogs with cancer. Do we feed them a prescription diet? Raw foods? Puree foods until they are mushy? What do we do? According to Dr. McDermott, the best approach is to feed items that have been lightly cooked to help the body process easier.

In the podcast, she said “If we take broccoli, for example, it has a fibrous shell to it. It’s not easy for our dogs to break that down if we didn’t start the process for them. It’s not that the body can’t handle these foods, it’s good for them to have, it’s just that it’s hard for their bodies to break down and they will be using extra energy to do so. The cooking process will break that down a little bit for them.” She continued, “in addition to that shell, we are talking about hot versus cold foods. When feeding something cold, even if it’s considered a “warming” food in medicine, it also takes away necessary energy and gives the body a bit of a shock. We don’t want to make it too hot, we just want to cook it enough so it jump starts the digestive process for them.”
