Integrative Veterinarian Dr. Katie Kangas

Podcast with Dr. Katie Kangas

Dr. Katie Kangas is an integrative veterinarian focusing on preventative health and natural wellness using both conventional and holistic medicine. Her preventative medicine focuses on diet, nutritional supplements, herbal medicine, acupuncture, homeopathic remedies, and essential oils. Dr. Kangas’ conventional approach focuses more on the treatment of disease and its symptoms after the condition has presented itself. In her professional opinion, the use of both conventional and holistic approaches together is the most beneficial method to medicine.

Dr. Kangas earned her DVM from the University of Wisconsin in 1993. She then went on to become a certified veterinary acupuncturist, chiropractor, and practice food therapy, herbal therapy, and other holistic methodologies. She is a member of the AHVMA and the International Veterinary Association of Pain Management and has many publications published in veterinary journals and pet magazines, as well as a strong history of national and international speaking engagements. From 2002 to 2007, Dr. Kangas served as Medical Director of the San Diego Humane Society & SPCA.

It’s a Dog’s Life

We were thrilled to have her on ‘It’s a Dog’s Life’ podcast to discuss her specialties. The primary emphasis throughout the discussion was the importance of food on pet health.

For all of her patients, she begins with nutrition and providing the body with the best resources possible through food. And after each session, she educates her clients and provides them an appointment outline, which is similar to a go-home sheet.

She explained, “the first item on my prescription list is food. So that’s where we begin. And this is an important component of functional medicine. You can really define functional medicine as two key concepts in my opinion. And the first idea is to provide the body with the best resources possible in order for it to work at its best.”

She continued to explain, “the second concept of functional medicine is to look at how we can prevent or reduce the offenders that are causing illness, such as cell death, degeneration, and chronic inflammation, because inflammation is at the root of any chronic disease you can think of. So one of my responsibilities in assisting my patients is to determine what we can eliminate from their everyday routine to minimize inflammation and disease-causing patterns in their bodies.”
