Is Conventional Flea and Tick Medicine Safe for Dogs?

As we mentioned, we all want to help protect our pets from fleas and ticks, but too often the medications recommended by conventional vets are doing more harm than good. Additionally, the chemicals that are found in most flea and tick meds are dangerous not only to our pets, but also to us, and to our rivers and streams. These flea and tick medications contain harmful ingredients, including pesticides, that can cause major inflammation and allergic reactions in our pets, as well as more serious effects, including depression, brain dysfunction, seizures, cancer and even poisoning and death.

In fact, every 36 hours since Trifexis, one of the most popular flea and tick meds, hit the market, another pet parent reports that Trifexis killed their dog. In addition, since Seresto flea and tick collars were introduced in 2012, the EPA has received incident reports of at least 1,698 related pet deaths

So with all these harmful medications and flea and tick products, how can we safely and naturally protect our pets from fleas and ticks?

Baltic Amber Flea and Tick Protection Collars

Help protect your dog from fleas and ticks safely, with the natural power of amber. Baltic Amber Flea Protection Collars are 100% natural and long lasting. They come in plenty of shapes and sizes and can be worn safely for natural flea and tick prevention for dogs.

Amber is fossilized tree resin, that’s hardened over millions of years. Raw Baltic Amber refers to the Amber found on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Baltic amber for animals is most effective when it is raw, and has its natural “skin”. Baltic amber has the highest amount of succinic acid and the properties are highest with the raw amber, or amber that still contains the outer “skin”. Succinic acid is a natural analgesic (pain reliever). As your pet wears the Amber, their body temperature will activate the succinic acid and it will be absorbed through the skin.

In addition to their pain relieving properties, Amber collars work to protect your pet from fleas and ticks in a couple of ways. When the Baltic Amber rubs against your pet’s fur, it creates a static charge that makes it difficult for pests to cling to their fur. Also, as the amber warms from contact with your pet, it starts to release an aroma from the natural terpenes found in the amber. This creates an aroma that wards off pests, but is typically undetectable to humans and does not bother our pets. In addition to natural flea and tick prevention for dogs, many pet parents have reported that the amber collars also help with their pet’s ear mites, and in warding off mosquitos!

Safely Removing Fleas & Ticks

If your pet already has an infestation of fleas or ticks, it is best to remove them first, as amber is a preventative, but will not kill these pests. So how do you deal with fleas and ticks on your pet?

First remove any ticks, here are the recommended guidelines for safely removing a tick from the CDC. In the case of fleas, you can bathe your pet, using all natural shampoos. A flea shampoo isn’t needed to kill fleas as any shampoo or conditioner will work to suffocate fleas. Start at the neck and wash downwards, as fleas will immediately start to run towards any dry areas on your dog, so you don’t want them to run to their face. Also be sure to wash their bedding, soft toys, blankets, and vacuum all areas. Be sure to be thorough, as if there are any surviving flea eggs, this can cause a reinfestation.

Once your pet is free from fleas and ticks, then a Baltic Amber collar can help protect them from future infestations. Additionally, spraying apple cider vinegar, diluted with water, on their fur, as well as their bedding, is another natural option to help protect from fleas and ticks. Essential oils can also help protect from fleas and ticks, as they don’t like the strong aroma. Some essential oils that help protect against fleas and ticks include lemongrass, lavender, and cedarwood. Always be sure to properly dilute your essential oils, and make sure you’re sourcing therapeutic or medical grade essential oils.
