Your Pet And Their Oral Hygiene With Emily Stein
Your Pet And Their Oral Hygiene With Emily Stein
For this week’s episode of It’s A Dog’s Life, we got the chance to sit down with Emily Stein Ph.D., to talk about the oral health and hygiene in our pets.
Sometimes, our pet’s oral health and hygiene are forgotten and that’s a problem. Just like us, keeping our mouth clean and healthy is not only keeping our breath smelling nice – it’s preventing other health problems that could arise.
About Emily Stein Ph.D.
Emily Stein is an amazing woman! With her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of California – Dr. Stein studied stress responses and community development in bacteria. Along with her Ph.D., Dr. Stein also received her B.S. in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa and she completed her Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Department of Immunology & Rheumatology at Stanford. She brings a unique scientific background that spans molecular biology, microbiology, and molecular and cellular immunology.
Along with her amazing science and education background, Dr. Stein is a great entrepreneur. Dr. Stein is the founder & CEO of Primal Health, LLC. Primal Health is a biotech company focused on alleviating oral health disparities and improving the quality of life and longevity for its customers. They reach their mission by producing innovative, cost-effective oral care products centered on re-engineering disease-causing bacterial biofilms into those that are health-promoting.
How it all started
Dr. Stein rescued Tinzley, the dog, from a shelter at 10 years old. Tinzley had multiple health conditions that we’re all caused by poor dental care.
“No one could have communicated how bad Tinzley’s breath was.”
From the horrible breath and the other symptoms of distress shown through Tinzley’s actions – Dr. Stein knew oral bacteria was the source of Tinzley’s eye and bladder infections, skin irritations, and lack of energy and needed to help!
Tinzley is a great example of how dental issues and bad hygiene can turn into way worse health concerns in the future. Pet oral health is important and Dr. Stein needed to do something!
How to tell your dog is in distress
Dr. Stein knew there were issues when she could see the distress signs all over her dog Tinzley. Some symptoms to look out for in your dog are:
- Panting a lot more than usual
- Drinking lots of water
- Laziness (laying around more than usual)
- Not food motivated (not eating meals the way your dog usually does)
- Horrible breath
Natural Options For Gum Disease
First off, gum disease is more common then we think in both humans and dogs. Gum Disease in our dogs is a mixture of inflammation and infection in the gums that can cause the teeth to physically fallout. Plus, over 80% of dogs will experience Gum Disease in their lifetime!
Unfortunately, one of the main causes of Gum Disease in our dogs is their diet and the chewable’s that are supposed to be for our dog’s mouth. The chemicals and non-natural ingredients in these products and food are just making it worse.
That’s why Dr. Stein and her team have developed an approach to grow the beneficial protective bacteria in the mouths of both humans and dogs. How do they do this? Natural Nutrients!
Building a healthier microbiome over time with the right nutrients creates a healthier mouth in return.
“We found this to be a better and faster approach to an antibiotic.”
TEEF! is the natural product created by Dr. Stein for our pet’s oral hygiene and health.
The easy-to-use powder goes right into your dog’s water and gives them the nutrients they need for a healthy mouth. The powder formulation for pets is called Protektin, a combination of 4 natural ingredients to promote a healthy mouth. The 4 ingredients are:
- Soluble Fiber (helps get rid of bad bacteria)
- Amino Acid (Prevents plaque buildup and bacteria odor)
- Vitamin (increases beneficial bacteria)
- Sodium Bicarbonate (Strengthens and whitens teeth)
